Why Would You See An Orthopedic Surgeon? Understanding The Nature Of Your Injury

Whatever the location of your discomfort and whether it is mild, moderate, or severe – you need to understand the nature of your orthopedic injury with the help of a qualified orthopedic surgeon. This will allow you to obtain proper treatment or orthopedic surgery that relieves the pain and restores your mobility.

Pain is the body’s way of letting you know that you have sustained an injury or are suffering from an illness. Sometimes, the cause of your pain is immediate and obvious, such as when a bone is fractured, or a muscle is strained following a particular activity. This is what is referred to as acute pain. Other times, you might feel pain that comes and goes for months on end and aren’t sure why. This is known as chronic pain. Distinguishing the difference between the two types of pain can help you better understand the nature of your injury and your treatment options.

Chronic pain is typically pain that lasts for three months or more and doesn’t resolve itself. Most of the time, it affects bones or joints, creating pain and discomfort that can have a negative impact on your daily function. Chronic pain is usually age-related, genetic, or the result of overusing certain joints, bone, and muscles. It usually starts slowly and continually worsens over time.

On the other hand, acute pain is the most common type of pain and usually associated with general injuries or illnesses, and can cause pain to soft tissue. Most often, it is the result of trauma to an affected area, such as a vehicular accident or a muscle strain or sports injuries. Besides sudden and severe pain, signs of an acute injury include swelling, an inability to place weight on your lower limbs, extreme tenderness to upper extremities, a visible dislocation or bone fracture, or the inability to move a joint through a full range of motion. The good news is that acute injuries typically respond well to appropriate treatment and physical therapy, and the pain will generally subside as the injured area heals.

Whether you are dealing with acute or chronic pain, a licensed orthopedist can help assess your injury and help you determine what next steps you should take, and whether or not you need orthopedic surgery.
